What building suppliers carry

Most yards keep the heavy basics in stock and order in the rest.

  • Masonry: face bricks, stock bricks, concrete blocks and pavers.
  • Binders and aggregates: cement, plaster sand, building sand, river sand, crusher dust and stone.
  • Roofing: IBR and corrugated sheets, tiles, purlins, nails and sealing strips.
  • Timber and boards: structural pine, plywood, chipboard and gypsum board.

Reinforcing steel, lintels, damp-proof course and brickforce are usually available too.

Some yards also supply paving, retaining-wall blocks, fencing poles and steel doors and windows, which helps when one project covers the house and the garden.

Working out how much you need

Over-ordering wastes money and under-ordering stops work. Measure each wall, floor or roof area and give the supplier your dimensions. A mason or the supplier can turn them into numbers of bricks, bags and cubes. Add an allowance for breakage and cuts.

Sand and stone are sold by the cubic metre, so say how deep your slab or bed will be. Cement comes in bags, and the mix ratio changes the count. If you are unsure, send a simple sketch with your request.

Delivery by truck

Bricks, sand and stone are heavy, so delivery matters as much as the material. Suppliers use flatbeds, tippers and trucks with offload cranes.

  • Check that the truck can reach your gate, especially in a narrow street or an estate with weight limits.
  • Ask where the load will be dropped and who will stack it.
  • Cover cement and keep it dry, as a Cape winter or a Highveld thunderstorm can ruin bags overnight.

Tell the supplier about steep driveways, soft ground or overhead wires before the day.

Some suppliers will return later to collect pallets, so ask about that before the load arrives. Check the order against the delivery note while the driver is still there, and report broken bricks or short counts on the spot. Keep the delivery note, because it is your proof if a count is disputed later.

What affects the quote

No prices appear on this site, because yards price each order on its own. The quote depends on the materials and grades, quantities, the distance to your site and the type of truck needed. Standard bricks and special face bricks differ widely. Say whether the work needs municipal approval, since some suppliers also ask for plans on large orders. Add your delivery date, access notes and whether you want a single drop or staged loads over several weeks.

Comparing building supplies quotes

Prices for building supplies move with stock levels, transport costs and the brand you choose. When quotes arrive, check:

  • Exact product: the brand, size, grade or colour, so every quote is for the same thing.
  • Quantities: the price per unit, pack or square metre, and whether a full pallet or box is cheaper.
  • Stock and delivery: in stock or on order, delivery to site or collection, and any off-loading charge.
  • VAT and returns: whether VAT is included, how long the price holds and whether unused stock can go back.

What to include in your request

  • State wall, floor or roof areas in metres.
  • Name the brick or block type you want.
  • Describe truck access to your gate.
  • Mention where the load must be dropped.
  • Give your preferred delivery date.

Frequently asked questions

Can I order small quantities?

Yes, many yards sell by the bag, the pallet or the single sheet. Very small loads may cost more per unit to deliver, so collecting in your own bakkie can save money. Say in your request which option you prefer, and ask whether the yard can hold your order.

How do I know how much sand and stone to order?

Measure the length, width and depth of the area and give those figures. Suppliers sell sand and stone by the cubic metre and can calculate the load. Allow a little extra for compaction and spillage.

Do I need plans before I buy materials?

For structural changes, new walls and some carports or decks, your municipality needs approved plans under the National Building Regulations. Suppliers do not check this for you. Get approval first, then order the materials.

How do quotes work and what do they depend on?

You send one form and independent suppliers reply directly. There is no fee and no obligation. Each quote depends on materials, quantities, delivery distance and truck type. We do not see or set the figures.
