A driveway gate is your first line of defence, and a gate that jams or stands open lets trouble in. HandymanService.co.za is a free quote-request service for South Africa. Tell us about your motor gate repairs, whether a stuck sliding gate, a swing gate that drops or a dead motor, and we pass the request to independent gate technicians, welders and handymen who quote you directly. We do not do the work and we never give prices. There is no fee and no obligation to accept a quote.

Sliding and swing gates

The type of gate decides what usually goes wrong.

  • Sliding gates: run on wheels along a track or hang from a rail. Wheels wear, tracks fill with grit and gates run off the rail.
  • Swing gates: hang on hinges and swing on an arm or a ram. Sagging hinges, worn pivots and weak posts are common faults.
  • Manual gates: simple hinged or sliding gates that still need locks, latches and wheels.

Tell the technician how wide and heavy the gate is and which way it opens.

Motors, remotes and load-shedding

A gate motor drives the gate through a rack, chain or arm. Typical faults are a worn gear, a tripped limit switch, a faulty control board, flat remote batteries or a damaged receiver. Safety beams that are dirty or misaligned stop the gate from closing. A technician can test the motor, reset the limits and program new remotes.

Load-shedding is a big cause of calls. Without a battery, the motor cannot move the gate. A backup battery and charger keep the gate working through outages. Learn where the manual release key is and keep it close.

Mains wiring to the motor is electrical work. A registered electrician should handle new circuits and issue a Certificate of Compliance.

Rust, welding and structural repairs

Steel gates rust, especially in coastal air and where paint has chipped. A welder can cut out rusted frames, weld cracks, replace bars and re-hang the gate. Sanding, a rust-converting primer and a fresh coat of paint stop it returning. Galvanised frames last longer.

A gate is only as strong as its posts. A leaning post or a cracked footing will pull the gate out of line again, however well it is adjusted. Gate tracks also need to be level and clear of sand and leaves.

Keep the track free of stones and lubricate the wheels and hinges. A yearly service avoids many break-downs.

What affects the quote

We do not show prices. The main cost drivers are the gate type and size, the motor brand and age, the parts needed, the amount of welding and painting, and how easy the gate is to reach. Older motors may need parts that are hard to find, and a replacement may suit better.

Describe what the gate does, any noises and when the fault began. Give the motor brand if you know it, and add photographs of the gate, track and motor. Say if the problem started after a power cut or storm. Complexes and estates may also set rules on gate style.

Comparing quotes for gate repairs

The lowest figure is not always the best deal. When your quotes arrive, check:

  • Scope: exactly what is included, from preparation and materials to rubble removal and clean-up.
  • Materials: the brand, grade or quantity allowed for, and who buys and delivers them.
  • Timing: when the work can start, how long it takes and what happens if it rains.
  • Guarantee and terms: any workmanship guarantee, deposit, payment stages and how long the price holds.

What to include in your request

  • State whether the gate is sliding or swing, and its width.
  • Describe the fault and when it started.
  • Give the motor brand and age if you know them.
  • Attach photographs of the gate, track, posts and motor.
  • Mention rust, damage from a vehicle or a recent power cut.

Frequently asked questions

Do you repair gates?
No. HandymanService.co.za is a free quote-request service. We pass your request to independent gate technicians, welders and handymen in your area. They quote you directly and do the work. There is no fee to use the service and no obligation to accept any quote.
Why does my sliding gate keep getting stuck?
Worn wheels, a dirty or bent track, a misaligned gate or a weak post are the usual causes. A motor that struggles may also be at fault. A technician can clean and align the track, replace wheels and check the motor limits and force settings.
How can my gate work during load-shedding?
Fit a backup battery and charger so the motor keeps running through power cuts. You can also release the motor with its key and move the gate by hand. Keep the key somewhere you can reach, and test the release now and then.
What affects the cost of gate repairs?
Gate type, size, motor brand, parts, welding and painting all affect the quote. Rare parts for old motors cost more to source. Send the same photographs and description to each technician so you can compare their quotes fairly.
