A door that sticks, sags or will not lock is more than an annoyance. Door installation covers hanging new internal doors, replacing frames, fitting locks and putting in sliding doors. HandymanService.co.za is a free quote-request service for South Africa. Tell us what you need and we pass your request to independent installers and carpenters in your area, who quote you directly. We do not do the work and we never give prices. There is no fee and no obligation to accept a quote.

Types of door

Doors differ by position and by material.

  • Hollow-core: light and common for bedrooms and bathrooms.
  • Solid or semi-solid: better for sound and security.
  • External doors: hardwood, steel or aluminium, built for weather and break-ins.
  • Stacking and sliding doors: glass or aluminium, opening onto the stoep or garden.

Match the door to its job. A light hollow door in an outside doorway will warp and fail quickly.

Frames, hinges and locks

The frame matters as much as the door. Steel frames are built into brick walls, while timber frames suit many older homes. A crooked or rotten frame must be fixed first or the new door will never sit well.

Installers check that the opening is square, fit three hinges on heavier doors, set the gap evenly and plane the edges to swing freely. Locks, handles and latches are fitted last. For external doors, ask about multi-point locks, security hinges and strong strike plates, and consider a security gate in front.

Sliding doors and security

Sliding door installation needs a flat, level track and a frame that is plumb. Poor fitting causes jamming, drafts and rain leaks. Make sure the glazing is safety glass, as required for doors and large panes, and ask about locking bars.

Where a sliding door opens onto an outside area, a security gate or burglar bars add protection. Bedrooms should keep an escape route in case of fire, so choose a gate with an inside key or lockable section. Load-shedding affects electronic locks, so keep a mechanical key backup.

What affects the quote

We do not show prices. Installers consider the door type and size, whether a new frame is needed, locks and hardware, wall repairs, and the number of doors. Opening a new doorway in a wall is a bigger job and may need approval. Give measurements, photos and the product you plan to use.

Check what is included before you sign off. A quote should state whether it covers painting or varnishing the door, filling gaps in the wall around a new frame, and taking away the old door. For external doors, ask about weather seals and a threshold strip so rain and wind stay outside, and about a lock that meets your insurer's requirements.

Comparing quotes for door installation

The lowest figure is not always the best deal. When your quotes arrive, check:

  • Scope: exactly what is included, from preparation and materials to rubble removal and clean-up.
  • Materials: the brand, grade or quantity allowed for, and who buys and delivers them.
  • Timing: when the work can start, how long it takes and what happens if it rains.
  • Guarantee and terms: any workmanship guarantee, deposit, payment stages and how long the price holds.

What to include in your request

  • Measure the opening width, height and wall thickness.
  • State the door type and material you want.
  • Say whether the frame is sound or needs replacing.
  • Mention locks, security gates or burglar bars needed.
  • Add photos of the existing door and frame.

Frequently asked questions

Are you a door installer?
No. HandymanService.co.za is a free quote-request service. We pass your request to independent door installers, carpenters and handymen in your area. They quote you directly and do the work. There is no fee and no obligation to accept any quote.
Can an installer fit a door I buy myself?
Most can. Buy the right size and handing, and check the frame first. Ask whether the installer will also supply hinges, locks and fixings, and agree this before they start.
Do I need approval to add a new doorway?
Possibly. Cutting into a load-bearing wall needs an engineer and approved plans under the National Building Regulations. Non-load-bearing walls are simpler, but check with your municipality, body corporate or HOA first.
What affects the price of door installation?
Door type, frame condition, hardware, wall repairs and the number of doors drive the quote. Sliding doors and external security doors take longer. Send photos and measurements so installers can compare fairly.
