A dripping tap or a running toilet wastes water every hour, and municipal water is not free. Plumbing repairs range from a new washer to a blocked drain. HandymanService.co.za is a free quote-request service. Describe the fault once, and we pass your request to independent plumbers and handymen near you, who quote you directly. We do not do the work, and we never state prices. There is no fee and no duty to accept. Choose the one who explains the problem clearly and gives you a straight answer.

Small plumbing jobs a handyman can do

Many everyday faults are simple, and a capable handyman can fix them in one visit.

  • Replace tap washers, cartridges and flexible connectors.
  • Fix a toilet cistern that runs, leaks or will not flush, including float valves and flush mechanisms.
  • Replace a shower head, hose or basin waste.
  • Clear a blocked sink, basin or shower trap.
  • Fit a new tap or mixer in the same position.

Look for a clear price basis in the quote and ask for old parts back if you want proof of replacement.

When you need a PIRB plumber

Some work is regulated. Geyser installation or replacement, pressure valve changes and work on the hot water system must be done by a PIRB-registered plumber, who issues a plumbing Certificate of Compliance under SANS 10254. Insurers often ask for it after a claim. Gas pipework needs a SAQCC Gas registered installer.

A registered plumber should also handle new pipe runs, rerouted drains, sewer repairs and anything that changes the water supply. Tell us in your request if the job involves a geyser, and we route it to registered plumbers.

Leaks, damp and blocked drains

Hidden leaks cause damp patches, peeling paint, mould and high water bills. Check your water meter when everything is off. If it still moves, you have a leak. Switch off the main supply if water is flowing, and turn off the geyser if it is leaking.

Blocked drains usually come from grease, hair, roots or collapsed pipes. A plumber can clear the line with rods or a drain machine, and may inspect it with a camera if the blockage keeps returning. Old galvanised pipes in older houses corrode and may need replacing in sections.

What affects the quote

Plumbing quotes depend on the fault, the access, the parts and the time. A tap washer is quick. A leak behind a tiled wall needs the tiles opened and re-fixed. Call-out distance, after-hours work and the type of pipe (copper, PVC or multilayer) all change the quote. Ask whether parts are included, whether the old fittings will be disposed of, and whether the plumber is PIRB-registered for regulated work. Photos of the fault and the brand of the fitting help.

Know where your main stopcock is, and test it once a year so it turns when you need it. In an emergency you can then stop the water in seconds while you wait for help. Fit isolation valves under basins and toilets when you have the chance, because they make every later repair quicker.

Comparing quotes for plumbing repairs

The lowest figure is not always the best deal. When your quotes arrive, check:

  • Scope: exactly what is included, from preparation and materials to rubble removal and clean-up.
  • Materials: the brand, grade or quantity allowed for, and who buys and delivers them.
  • Timing: when the work can start, how long it takes and what happens if it rains.
  • Guarantee and terms: any workmanship guarantee, deposit, payment stages and how long the price holds.

What to include in your request

  • Describe the fault and where in the house it is.
  • Send a photo of the tap, toilet or pipe.
  • Say whether water is flowing and the main is closed.
  • Mention any geyser involvement so a registered plumber responds.
  • Ask whether parts and the call-out are included.

Frequently asked questions

Can a handyman do plumbing?
A handyman can fix simple things such as washers, flush mechanisms, shower heads and basin traps. Geysers, hot-water systems, gas and new pipework need a PIRB-registered plumber with a Certificate of Compliance for the work.
Why does my toilet keep running?
A running cistern is usually a worn float valve, a faulty flush valve or a seal that no longer closes. These parts are cheap and a plumber or capable handyman can replace them in one visit. Left alone, they can waste a lot of water every day.
What should I do about a leaking geyser?
Switch off the geyser at the DB board, close the cold-water supply to it and call a PIRB-registered plumber. A leaking geyser can ruin ceilings and create electrical danger, and the plumber must issue a certificate of compliance, so do not delay.
How are plumbing quotes calculated?
We give no prices. Plumbers look at the fault, parts, access, travel and time, and whether the work is regulated. Share photos and the fitting type so the plumber can quote accurately before he arrives.
