New floors change how a home looks and feels. Laminate flooring installation and vinyl plank flooring are popular because they go down fast over a sound base. HandymanService.co.za is a free quote-request service for South Africa. Tell us about your floor and we pass your request to independent flooring installers in your area, who quote you directly. We do not do the work and we never give prices. There is no fee and no obligation to accept a quote.

Laminate, vinyl and wood

Each flooring type has its strengths.

  • Laminate: a photo-printed board layer that clicks together. Affordable and fast, but does not like standing water.
  • Vinyl and SPC planks: waterproof and suited to kitchens, bathrooms and busy rooms.
  • Engineered or solid wood: warm and long-lasting, with sanding and sealing over the years.

Think about wet areas, pets, sun through big windows and how much foot traffic the room gets.

Floor preparation and levelling

A new floor is only as good as the base. The installer checks that the slab is dry, clean and flat. Dips are filled with a levelling compound, and high spots are ground down. Moisture in a concrete slab can ruin laminate and glue-down vinyl, so a damp test or a plastic membrane is wise on ground floors.

Old carpet, tiles or timber floors may need to come out first. Some installers lay new planks over existing tiles if they are firm and flat.

Clay soils can move, so cracks in the slab should be repaired before covering.

Underlay, skirting and finishing

Underlay softens footsteps, reduces noise and adds a moisture barrier. Floating floors need an expansion gap of a few millimetres at the walls, which skirting boards or trims then cover. Doors may need trimming at the bottom so they still swing over the new level.

Fitting around door frames, cupboards and pipes takes careful cutting. Transition strips join different floor types at doorways. Ask the installer to include new skirting, or to refit the old boards, so the finish looks neat from day one.

What affects the quote

We do not show prices. Installers consider the floor area, the product, the state of the base, the amount of levelling, removal of old flooring and extras such as skirting and trims. Room shape and furniture removal add time. Send measurements and photos, and say whether you are buying the planks yourself or want the installer to supply them.

Plan around the room. Furniture must be cleared, and new planks should lie in the room for a day or two so they settle to the temperature. Ask whether the quote covers moving furniture, removing old flooring and skirting, and trimming door bottoms. Keep a few spare planks from the same batch for future repairs.

Comparing quotes for flooring installation

The lowest figure is not always the best deal. When your quotes arrive, check:

  • Scope: exactly what is included, from preparation and materials to rubble removal and clean-up.
  • Materials: the brand, grade or quantity allowed for, and who buys and delivers them.
  • Timing: when the work can start, how long it takes and what happens if it rains.
  • Guarantee and terms: any workmanship guarantee, deposit, payment stages and how long the price holds.

What to include in your request

  • Measure each room and note its shape.
  • Say which flooring type and product you prefer.
  • Describe the current floor and its condition.
  • Mention damp, uneven patches or cracks in the slab.
  • Check whether you or the installer will supply materials.

Frequently asked questions

Are you a flooring installer?
No. HandymanService.co.za is a free quote-request service. We pass your request to independent flooring installers and handymen in your area. They quote you directly and do the work. There is no fee and no obligation to accept any quote.
Is laminate suitable for bathrooms and kitchens?
Standard laminate swells when it gets wet. Vinyl or SPC planks are better for kitchens, bathrooms and laundries. If you want laminate in a kitchen, choose a water-resistant type and ask the installer to seal the edges.
Can a floor go over existing tiles?
Often yes, if the tiles are firmly stuck, flat and clean. Loose or hollow tiles must be fixed or removed. Thick grout lines may need filling. An installer will check before agreeing to lay over the top.
What affects the cost of flooring installation?
The floor area, the product, base condition, levelling, removal of old flooring and trims all play a part. Awkward room shapes and furniture moving add time. Share measurements and photos to compare quotes.
