A waterproofing membrane is only as good as the product and the surface under it. HandymanService.co.za is a free quote-request service for South Africa. Tell us what you need to waterproof, and we pass your request to independent suppliers who quote you directly. We do not sell products and we never give prices. There is no fee and no obligation to accept a quote. Compare a few replies on the same list, then choose the supplier whose products suit your roof, balcony or shower and your budget.
Membrane systems explained
Waterproofing products fall into a few families, each with its own strengths.
- Torch-on: bitumen sheets melted onto a primed deck, common on flat concrete roofs.
- Liquid rubber: brushed or rolled on in coats, good for complex shapes.
- Acrylic roof coatings: reflect heat and extend the life of sound roofs.
- Cementitious slurries: used in showers, planters and basements.
Match the system to the surface and the movement it faces.
Roof sheeting, IBR and corrugated iron have their own coatings and sealing strips, while concrete slabs, shower floors and retaining walls suit the membrane types above. A supplier who asks about your surface is usually the one to trust.
Torch-on and bitumen products
Searching for torch-on waterproofing shows several grades. Thicker sheets with a polyester reinforcement last longer and cope better with movement. A bitumen primer must go on first so the sheet bonds to the deck.
Torch-on needs gas, a torch and a trained applicator, because open flame near timber or insulation is a fire risk. Overlaps, upstands and corners are where leaks begin, so buy enough sheet to cover them properly.
Many suppliers sell torch-on in rolls of ten square metres or more, plus a cap sheet that adds a granule or aluminium finish to shield the layer below from the sun. Ask for flashing strips, corner pieces and drain outlets in the same order.
Sealants, tapes and liquid rubber
Not every leak needs a full membrane. Polyurethane and silicone sealants close gaps around pipes, flashing and window frames. Reinforcing fabric and tape bridge cracks before a coating goes over them. Waterproofing roof paint and liquid rubber suit small flats, parapets, gutters and balconies.
- Clean and dry the surface first.
- Fill cracks and fix loose areas.
- Apply the number of coats the label states.
Check how many hours of dry weather the product needs, as a surprise Highveld thunderstorm can wash off wet coats.
Coastal buyers should also check for salt and UV ratings, and anyone treating rising damp should ask for a damp-proof injection or a tanking slurry made for walls.
Choosing and what affects the quote
Describe where the water enters, what the surface is and how old it is. A supplier can then recommend a system and tell you how much to buy. The quote depends on the product, area, number of coats, accessories and delivery. We never show prices. Add photos of cracks, ponding or stains, plus the roof or balcony size, and ask about a manufacturer guarantee if you need one for your insurer or landlord.
Comparing waterproofing products quotes
Prices for waterproofing products move with stock levels, transport costs and the brand you choose. When quotes arrive, check:
- Exact product: the brand, size, grade or colour, so every quote is for the same thing.
- Quantities: the price per unit, pack or square metre, and whether a full pallet or box is cheaper.
- Stock and delivery: in stock or on order, delivery to site or collection, and any off-loading charge.
- VAT and returns: whether VAT is included, how long the price holds and whether unused stock can go back.
What to include in your request
- Describe where the water gets in.
- State the area in square metres.
- Name the surface: concrete, metal, tile or timber.
- Send photos of cracks, ponding or stains.
- Ask about guarantees and drying times.
Frequently asked questions
Which waterproofing product suits a flat concrete roof?
Torch-on membrane and liquid rubber are both common. The right choice depends on the roof's condition, movement and slope. Send photos and the roof area and let suppliers recommend a system and the number of coats.
Can I buy waterproofing for a DIY job?
Liquid rubber, sealants and coatings are fine for careful DIY work. Torch-on needs a trained applicator because of the fire risk. Follow the label on surface preparation, number of coats and drying times, and keep the surface dry for the stated period.
How long does a membrane last?
It depends on the product, the thickness, sun exposure and how well it was applied. Good prep and proper overlaps matter as much as the brand. Ask suppliers about warranties, what they cover and what upkeep the maker expects.
How do quotes work and what do they depend on?
You send one form and independent suppliers reply directly. There is no fee and no obligation. Each quote depends on product type, area, coats, accessories and delivery. We never see or set the figures, so compare several replies.
