Gutters carry rainwater off your roof and away from your walls and foundations. When they block, sag or leak, water soaks the fascia, stains the walls and pools at the base of the house. HandymanService.co.za is a free quote-request service for South Africa. Tell us about your gutters, whether new, repaired or cleaned, and independent installers and handymen quote you directly. We do not do the work and we never give prices. There is no fee and no obligation to accept a quote.

Gutter types and materials

Three materials are common on South African homes.

  • Seamless aluminium: formed on site from a coil to the exact length of your roof, so there are no joins to leak. A popular choice for new fascias.
  • PVC: sectional gutters that clip together. Lighter and easier to fit, with joints that need checking.
  • Galvanised or painted steel: strong but prone to rust, especially near the coast.

Ask for seamless gutters if you want fewer joints. Check the colour range, since powder-coated finishes last longer in strong sun.

Gutter installation and downpipes

A good gutter installation starts with a straight, sound fascia board. Rotten timber must be repaired first, or the brackets will pull loose. The installer sets a slight fall towards the downpipes so water drains instead of standing.

Downpipes should lead to a storm-water drain, a soakaway or a rainwater tank. Dumping water against a wall causes damp and can undermine paving. If you want to harvest rain, ask the installer to fit a diverter or first-flush filter above the tank.

Size matters too. A roof that sheds heavy summer rain needs wider gutters and enough downpipes, not just one at the end.

Cleaning, repairs and leaf guards

Leaves, bird droppings and roof grit collect in gutters and block outlets. A cleaning gutters service clears the channels, flushes the downpipes and checks for sagging or open joints. Do this before the rainy season and after strong wind.

Repairs include re-sealing joints, refixing brackets, straightening sagging runs and replacing rusted sections. Leaf guards and mesh reduce blockages under jacarandas, plane trees and pines, though they still need an occasional clean.

Gutters sit high, so cleaning calls for a stable ladder and a second person. If your roof is asbestos-cement, do not drill or scrub it yourself. Ask for a registered asbestos contractor.

What affects the quote

We do not show prices. The main cost drivers are the length of the run, the material and colour, the number of downpipes, the height of the house and the condition of the fascia. Removing old gutters and repairing timber add to the scope.

Tell us whether you want new gutters, repairs or cleaning only. Give the roof type, the number of storeys and the approximate length. Add photographs of the existing gutters and fascia. Mention overhanging trees, and say if you are in a complex or estate that must approve exterior colours.

Comparing quotes for gutters

The lowest figure is not always the best deal. When your quotes arrive, check:

  • Scope: exactly what is included, from preparation and materials to rubble removal and clean-up.
  • Materials: the brand, grade or quantity allowed for, and who buys and delivers them.
  • Timing: when the work can start, how long it takes and what happens if it rains.
  • Guarantee and terms: any workmanship guarantee, deposit, payment stages and how long the price holds.

What to include in your request

  • State whether you need new gutters, repairs or cleaning.
  • Give the roof type and the number of storeys.
  • Estimate the total length of gutter and number of downpipes.
  • Attach photographs of the fascia and any damage.
  • Mention trees nearby and any colour rules from your HOA.

Frequently asked questions

Do you install gutters?
No. HandymanService.co.za is a free quote-request service. We send your request to independent gutter installers, roofers and handymen in your area. They quote you directly and do the work. There is no fee to use the service and no obligation to accept any quote.
Are seamless gutters better than PVC?
Seamless aluminium has no joints along the run, so fewer places to leak, and it is cut to length on site. PVC is lighter and can be fitted more simply, but joints need checking. The better choice depends on your roof, budget and finish.
How often should gutters be cleaned?
At least once a year, ideally before the rainy season. Homes under large trees or with pine needles may need it twice. Clean them also after a big storm, since a blocked gutter overflows onto walls and fascia boards.
What affects gutter quotes?
Length of run, material, colour, number of downpipes, house height and the state of the fascia all matter. Old gutters to remove and timber to repair add to the job. Send the same details to each installer so the quotes compare fairly.
