Pipes and fittings

Pipe choice depends on use. Check which type your existing system uses before buying.

  • Copper: long-lasting hot and cold supply, joined by soldering or press fittings.
  • PEX and multilayer: flexible pipe that runs around corners with fewer joints.
  • PVC and polypropylene: drains, waste and cold supply.
  • Fittings: elbows, tees, couplings, isolating valves and push-fit connectors.

Take an old fitting to the counter if you are unsure of the size.

Compression and push-fit connectors suit quick repairs, while soldered or press joints suit permanent runs. Keep a few isolating valves and Teflon tape in the toolbox for the next leak.

Taps, mixers and bathroom ware

Basin and kitchen mixers vary in size, spout height and cartridge type. Measure the hole spacing and check whether your water pressure is low, as some tapware needs more. Ceramic cartridges last longer and are easier to replace than rubber washers.

For toilets, choose between close-coupled and concealed cisterns, and between wall and floor outlets. Shower mixers, flexible hoses, basin traps and waste fittings finish the set. Spare cistern fill valves and flush buttons are cheap parts that cure many leaks.

Waste traps, bottle traps and flexible connectors also vary in size, so write down the pipe diameters before you shop. Check that basins, bath panels and shower trays include their wastes.

Geyser parts and tank fittings

Common geyser spares include thermostats, elements, pressure-control valves and drain cocks. These are products, not a licence to do the work: geyser installation and replacement need a PIRB-registered plumber and a plumbing Certificate of Compliance (SANS 10254), which insurers often request.

For rainwater harvesting or backup supply, suppliers also stock JoJo tank fittings, float valves, tank connectors and small pumps. Ask for stainless or brass connectors where water sits for long periods.

Always switch off the supply and relieve the pressure before you touch any fitting. If you smell gas or see a burst pipe near wiring, call a registered professional at once.

What affects the quote

We show no prices because plumbing lists vary so much. The quote depends on the pipe material and diameter, brand and finish of tapware, quantities and stock on hand. Delivery costs add to long pipe lengths and heavy tanks. Give sizes where you can, such as 15 mm or 22 mm, and say whether items are for hot or cold supply. Photos of old parts, plus your delivery address and deadline, help suppliers quote correctly the first time.

Comparing plumbing supplies quotes

Prices for plumbing supplies move with stock levels, transport costs and the brand you choose. When quotes arrive, check:

  • Exact product: the brand, size, grade or colour, so every quote is for the same thing.
  • Quantities: the price per unit, pack or square metre, and whether a full pallet or box is cheaper.
  • Stock and delivery: in stock or on order, delivery to site or collection, and any off-loading charge.
  • VAT and returns: whether VAT is included, how long the price holds and whether unused stock can go back.

What to include in your request

  • List pipe sizes, materials and lengths.
  • Note whether lines carry hot or cold water.
  • Send photos of old taps, cartridges or fittings.
  • State your water pressure if you know it.
  • Give your delivery address and deadline.

Frequently asked questions

Which pipe type should I choose?

Match the pipe to what is already in the wall and the job. Copper and multilayer suit pressurised supply, while PVC suits drains. A supplier can advise once you give the diameter, the length and whether the line carries hot water.

Can I fit a geyser myself?

No. Geyser installation or replacement needs a PIRB-registered plumber and a plumbing Certificate of Compliance under SANS 10254. Buying the parts is easy, but the fitting must be done and certified by a registered plumber.

How do I match a tap or mixer?

Measure the hole spacing and note the connection type. Take the old cartridge or a clear photo to the supplier. Mixers for low-pressure homes may differ from those for mains pressure, so tell the supplier if your water comes from a tank.

How do quotes work and what do they depend on?

You send one form and independent suppliers reply directly. There is no fee and no obligation. Each quote depends on pipe type and size, tapware range, quantities and delivery. We never see or set the figures, so compare several replies.
