Good tiling adhesive, grout and trims keep a tiled floor or wall in place for years. HandymanService.co.za is a free quote-request service for South Africa. Tell us your tiling job and what materials you need, and we pass your request to independent tile and building suppliers who quote you directly. We do not sell tiles and we never give prices. There is no fee and no obligation to accept a quote. Compare a few replies on the same list, then choose the supplier that suits your room, your tile and your deadline.

Tiles and what goes with them

A tiling order has more parts than the tile itself.

  • Tiles: porcelain, ceramic, natural stone and outdoor-rated types, with a few spare boxes from the same batch.
  • Adhesive: cement-based powder or ready-mixed tub, chosen for tile and surface.
  • Grout: in a colour that suits the tile, and epoxy grout for wet areas.
  • Extras: spacers, edge trims, levelling clips and silicone for corners.

Tile shops often sell by batch number and colour tone, so buy the full amount in one go. Showrooms let you see a tile in daylight before you commit.

Choosing tiling cement and grout

Tiling cement, also called tile adhesive, comes in grades. Standard grades suit small wall tiles on sound plaster. Flexible, high-bond grades suit large porcelain tiles, floors that may move and outdoor areas. Grout fills the joints and stops water getting in, so choose a flexible or water-resistant type for showers.

Always match the product to the tile and the base. A dusty or damp base ruins the bond, and a supplier can suggest a primer for tricky surfaces like old paint or a smooth screed.

Sand and cement screed levels an uneven floor before tiling. Ask whether the bag needs mixing with water or with a bonding additive, and whether it must cure for days before the tiles go down.

Tools for cutting and laying

The right tools save broken tiles. Hand cutters work for straight cuts on ceramic. Porcelain and stone need a wet saw or an angle grinder with a diamond blade.

  • Notched trowels in a size that suits the tile.
  • A rubber float for grouting and sponges for cleaning.
  • A spirit level, tape measure and rubber mallet.
  • Knee pads and eye protection.

Many suppliers hire out cutters for a day, which suits a once-off bathroom.

Mixing buckets, a drill with a paddle and a sponge bucket also help. Pick up a few extra trims for door thresholds so the edge of your new floor looks finished.

Estimating and what affects the quote

Measure the floor or wall area and add about ten percent for cuts and breakage, more for diagonal layouts. Tiles are sold by the square metre or per box, and adhesive by the bag. Coverage depends on trowel size and how flat the base is. The quote depends on tile range, quantity, adhesive grade, grout colour and delivery. We never show prices. Give room sizes, the base type, indoor or outdoor use and your delivery address in your request.

Comparing tiling supplies quotes

Prices for tiling supplies move with stock levels, transport costs and the brand you choose. When quotes arrive, check:

  • Exact product: the brand, size, grade or colour, so every quote is for the same thing.
  • Quantities: the price per unit, pack or square metre, and whether a full pallet or box is cheaper.
  • Stock and delivery: in stock or on order, delivery to site or collection, and any off-loading charge.
  • VAT and returns: whether VAT is included, how long the price holds and whether unused stock can go back.

What to include in your request

  • Measure each area to be tiled.
  • State the tile size and material.
  • Say whether the area is wet, outdoor or heated.
  • Describe the base: screed, plaster or old tiles.
  • Ask for extra tiles from the same batch.

Frequently asked questions

How much tiling adhesive do I need?

It depends on the floor area, tile size and trowel notch. Large tiles need a deeper bed and more adhesive. Give the supplier your area and tile size and they can work out the number of bags, with a margin for uneven bases.

Can I use the same adhesive for floors and walls?

Not always. Some grades suit walls only, while floors and large porcelain tiles need a stronger, flexible type. Check the product label or ask the supplier to match it to your tile, your base and the room.

Why buy extra tiles?

Cuts, breakage and future repairs all need spares. Tiles from a later batch can differ slightly in shade, so keep a spare box from the same batch. Most installers suggest about ten percent extra, and more for diagonal layouts.

How do quotes work and what do they depend on?

You send one form and independent suppliers reply directly. There is no fee and no obligation to accept. Each quote depends on tile range, quantity, adhesive and grout choice, and delivery. We never see or set the figures, so compare several replies.
