Home repairs cover everything that has broken, cracked, leaked or worn out. HandymanService.co.za is a free quote-request service for South Africa. Tell us what needs fixing and where, and we pass your request to independent handymen and contractors, who quote you directly. We do not carry out repairs ourselves and we never quote prices. You pay no fee, and you can say no to any quote. Compare a few replies, ask for references and book the handyman who explains the fix most clearly.

Common repairs we see

Most repairs fall into a handful of groups, and each has typical causes in South African homes.

  • Cracks: hairline cracks from paint and plaster movement, and wider cracks where clay soil has moved.
  • Doors and windows: swollen timber, loose hinges, broken locks and failed seals.
  • Leaks: dripping taps, seeping geyser pipes and stained ceilings.
  • Storm damage: lifted roof sheets, broken tiles, fallen fences and torn gutters after hail or wind.

Cracks and settlement

Not every crack is serious. Thin, stable cracks in plaster are normal and a handyman can fill and repaint them. Wide, stepped or growing cracks, or cracks above doors and windows, can point to movement in the foundations or lintels. Clay soils on the Highveld swell and shrink with the seasons, and poor drainage makes it worse.

If a crack keeps returning or widens, ask for an assessment by a builder or engineer before cosmetic repairs. A handyman will tell you honestly which kind you have, and no patch lasts if the cause stays.

Repairs after storms and leaks

Summer thunderstorms and Cape winter rain expose weak spots fast. Photograph the damage as soon as it is safe, and keep receipts for the insurer. Ask for a temporary cover over the roof if water is still coming in.

A handyman can replace broken tiles, reseal flashing, fix gutters and patch ceilings. Large roof jobs, asbestos-cement sheets and anything structural need a specialist. Old asbestos roofs and ceilings must not be cut or drilled by unprotected workers, so tell us if you suspect your roof contains it.

What affects the quote

Repairs are hard to price without seeing them. The quote depends on the cause, the size of the damaged area, access, the materials and how many trades are needed. A cosmetic patch takes far less than a repair that first has to find the source of a leak. Photos and a short written description help handymen quote with fewer visits. Ask whether the quote is fixed or an estimate, whether finishing and paint touch-ups are included, and what guarantee comes with the repair.

Act early. Water finds its way in, and a small leak left over summer becomes a ruined ceiling by winter. A loose hinge wears out the frame, and a chipped tile lets moisture under the floor. Quick repairs are usually cheaper, easier to match in colour and kinder to the rest of the house.

Keep photos of before and after for your records and for any claim.

Comparing quotes for home repairs

The lowest figure is not always the best deal. When your quotes arrive, check:

  • Scope: exactly what is included, from preparation and materials to rubble removal and clean-up.
  • Materials: the brand, grade or quantity allowed for, and who buys and delivers them.
  • Timing: when the work can start, how long it takes and what happens if it rains.
  • Guarantee and terms: any workmanship guarantee, deposit, payment stages and how long the price holds.

What to include in your request

  • Photograph the damage close up and from a distance.
  • Describe when the problem started and what changed.
  • Say if the damage is covered by an insurance claim.
  • Ask whether finishing and painting are included.
  • Request a written guarantee for the repair.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a home repair?
Anything that restores part of the house to working order: fixing cracks, doors, windows, taps, ceilings, gates and fences, or damage after storms. Larger rebuilds and extensions are building projects, and they need a contractor and sometimes municipal plans.
Should I fix a wall crack myself?
Hairline cracks can be filled and painted. A wide, stepped or growing crack needs a professional look first, because filling it will not stop the movement. Take dated photos over a few weeks, with a coin for scale, to show whether it is changing.
Will home insurance pay for repairs?
Policies often cover sudden storm, hail and burst-pipe damage, but not wear and tear. Photograph the damage, get a written quote and contact your insurer before repairs start. Some insurers prefer their own approved suppliers, and a repair done too early can complicate the claim.
How long does a home repair take?
Small repairs such as a lock, tap or hinge take an hour or two. Wall and ceiling repairs need drying and painting time, so they run over a few days. The handyman should give you an estimate when he quotes.
